2/1/2012 4:16:27 PM Hello, Just wondering if any reporters have this syndrome and how they deal with it. Is surgery worth it? Not sure if an elbow brace is enough. Thanks |

I've had trouble with my ulnar nerve for a few years now. it comes and goes. I haven't had surgery so I can't give you an opinion on that. The elbow brace works well for me. Sometimes I will sleep with the elbow brace and a wrist brace. that works the best. The nerve goes all the way from your neck down to your pinky. I found that if I sleep with my arm completely straight for a few weeks it gets better. Then once I stop doing that it gets worse again. Apparently, I sleep with my arms curled up underneath me so the nerve is pinched for 6 to 8 hours a night. Don't carry your purse on any plastic bags or anything on your wrist. that will make it worse. If you do a google search, you will find some stretching excercises that work pretty well. Also, Ibuprofen works well because it reduces the swelling. Also, try not to sleep on that side. I find that always make it worse for me. using the elbow and wrist brace will keep you from doing that. Your doctor can also show you some good stretches if he/she hasn't already. My doctor did a strenght test with my fingers and found that I haven't lost any strenght in my hand. that is why I'm just treating it with braces and Ibuprofen and not surgery. you should have that checked out if you haven't already. |

No surgery here, but different issues. And I, too, have found that sleeping with my arms outstretched can completely eliminate the problems. But it's easier said than done. I also have a habit of sleeping with my arms tucked tightly under my head. It's a no-no. |

| Josefa Soto I had great and lasting results from chiropractic treatment of my carpal tunnel problems. I would imagine the same approach can help with Ulnar Entrapment Syndrome. Saturday, February 04, 2012 | ||
| Jen Mackay I`m not sure exactly what this is but I had nerve issues in my arm. I was writing on a traditional writer and switched to an ergo writer and it hasn`t bothered me since because I can reposition the writer for comfort. Maybe look into something like that. | Elisa McKinion Medders If you google it, you will find some exercises to help some. Stretch those muscles! Saturday, February 04, 2012 | ||
| Trina Cox Friend had carpal tunnel surgery and ulnar on one arm only. Said ulnar was quick recovery. Saturday, February 04, 2012 | ||
| Mary Kluender I had ulnar nerve problems years ago as a direct result of doing a three-week daily copy job in federal court and working on transcripts until midnight. Very long time ago. Anyway I had extreme pain in some of my fingers and upper arm. I just rested for a couple weeks and it cleared up. I don`t think I stopped writing on my machine because as I recall, the most pain and disability came with the computer keyboard. Saturday, February 04, 2012 | ||
| Maryl Hart I had it - have it (does it ever really go away?) Anyway, got it resolved by visits to a chiropractor. The orthopedic surgeon told me I`d be off six months if I had the surgery to reposition it, it would leave a nasty scar, and they`d never be able to guarantee I`d work as a reporter again, even after rehabilitation. His advice was, I`ll give you all the anti-inflammatories you need, but I wouldn`t advise getting surgery on it ... ever. Sure `nuf, the chiropractor took care of it in about fi Saturday, February 04, 2012 | ||
| Joyce Wise Had ulnar nerve entrapment. Lost feeling in pinky and ring finger. Had surgery. Instant relief. Not a problem since. That was 10 yrs ago. Saturday, February 04, 2012 | ||
| Anna Sanchez I had problems with my both elbows and had cortisone shots on each of them, temporary relief until I started using Chondroitin vitamins, solved the problem. Saturday, February 04, 2012 | ||
| Susan Falzarano-Crivello I agree with Mary. I think it is from editing, and not the writer. Now, don`t laugh everyone. I actually edit on my recliner. I put my computer on a lapdesk on my legs, and I keep my remote for the TV next to me on mute so at least I have something to watch. It is the most comfortable position to edit in. If you have a recliner in your den, try it. You will be thanking me :) Sunday, February 05, 2012 | ||
