Is practicing on your machine suggested even though you are a working reporter?

Absolutely, unequivocally, yes.

I've been reporting longer than I care to admit and have rediscovered the benefits of practicing, but practicing at speeds higher than I normally write.  I also practice briefs that I'm trying to implement into my everday writing.  Recently I was on a huge, huge job.  If I had not practiced leading up to it, it would have been more stressful that it already was.  Moving your fingers at high practice speeds, without the stress of being in an actual job, I believe improves your speed proficiency as well as your accuracy.  There are many on-line programs available or try writing the news from TV.

Hope this helps.

Depends on how long you`ve been a working reporter. Not after 30 years

I still practice and I`ve been reporting for 30 plus years. I usually get to my job early and will practice then.

For the first 10 years I still practiced. I even brought my finger drill books to depos if I was set up and it was just me in the conference room until others arrived. Also, when I was feeling rusty or had a few bad writing days, I would even pull out my theory book for confidence. Not anymore, though. :o)

I have been reporting less than a year so I am thinking I should still be practicing. Thanks, ladies!

Maybe practiced some the first few years, but even after 4 mos when I had babies, I didn`t practice much. I sometimes write better after vacation and I`ve been reporting 26 years.

It`s like riding a bike, you never forget. After 20 years no practice is required, unless you have no life.

I have been reporting for 10 years and I still practice. Sometimes at night watching tv, I just sit and take everything down while I watch the tv.

If you are questioning whether or not you need practice, my guess is that you probably do. Improving your skills is never a bad idea.

I always arrive 30 minutes early to depos, then practice all names I can find associated with that particular depo. Other than that, no, I don`t practice after 37 years.

I think what is making me question my writing are the doctor depos and expert witnesses. I can`t seem to keep up with them.

I`ve been reporting 17 years, and my writing is constantly changing. When I first started, I was thrown into doctors and experts and had to come up with briefs. It`s more about shortening your writing as opposed to writing faster as far as keeping up. Now I`m always tweaking my writing, so I do practice at breaks and sometimes at home if I don`t have transcripts.

April Ayala-for dr and expert witnesses, I will google their name and find out what their specialty is, so I have an idea of what they`ll be talking about -- trying to prevent any surprises is a plus!

@Marian, wow. I can`t imagine 37 yrs on that machine. Congrats I just told a friend today, after 12 yrs u would think I wouldn`t have days where I feel like I`ve written garbage. I don`t practice speed drills but do still tweak my writing. I think we all have an off day sometimes.

I`ve been reporting 26 years, and I bought a LightSpeed last summer. I practice on it every night to NBC Nightly News. I am still not up to speed on it, but I`m getting there. People here in Tennessee talk really, really fast and really, really garbled. I have to practice in order to keep up. Didn`t have this problem in Texas. :(

It`s not enough to just practice writing. You have to practice accuracy, speed and endurance. You also need feedback on how you`re doing. You can`t get that from writing TV or radio. But, a product like PEV Speed Coach lets you practice all those things and you get reports on how well you did and the software generates drills for further practice. I use it about an hour a day. Works for me.

Over 35 years of reporting here. I only practice when I`m going to take a skills test (like the CRR in 3 weeks) or a speed test (at annual in August :) If you want to, go for it. If you don`t need to, don`t. But always, always, be open to new and better ways to write, edit and keep your equipment up to date and in tip top working condition. Learn, learn and learn some more.

I don`t practice but I work full time so I`m in court every day. I will sometimes practice briefs but I don`t listen to dictatation tapes anymore.@Anna - I do that all the time! Usually when I`m watching TV or when someone is talking to me. I thought I was the only one who did that! LOL

I practice in my head all the time. Especially after taking an all-day depo; I can`t shut it off! Drives me a little bit crazy. Maybe I`m already there :) I love finding outlines that slow me down. Then I practice that word over and over until I can tell it`s coming more smoothly. I love to find new ways to write things that work better. When I find something like that, I practice that over and over. As far as sitting down with a tape -- never happens. I never even did that in school.

When I don`t write for a while I do get rusty, notes get sloppy so practicing is a great idea.
