What is a docket number?

What exactly is a docket number and what does it mean on the caption page?  Are all docket numbers only 4 numbers?

It's the number that the court gives to a case when a case is filed.  It's put with all documents related to the case -- depositions, motions, subpoenas, interrogatories, etc., etc.
