5/22/2010 8:15:10 AM I have just started using a proofreader. I transcribe my job line by line and spell check it and send it to the proofreader. I was wondering should I proofread my job before I send it to the proofreader? What is normal practice? |

![]() | When you send your proofreader a job, it is supposed to be your final product as you would be ready to turn it in. They are proofing it again. If you do not proofread before you send it, you will be sending them a bunch of errors and their eratta sheet to you will be entirely too long. Think of it this way = your proofreader SHOULDN'T be able to find anything. Now you know you have a truly final product ready to send to your client. If you do not want to proof it, use a scopist; then proofread it when you get it back. That is why there is such a big difference in proofreading fees and scoping fees. |

I agree. I am a scopist, working mostly for my mom who is a court reporter; she sends transcripts to me, and then I scope them and send them back to her, and then she sends them to a proofreader after I scope them. She likes them to be super clean. However, when she doesn't send them to me, she at least proofreads them before sending them to a proofreader. Otherwise, like Jeanese said, the errata sheet will be entirely too long. I know this from doing proofreading also. - saracarmichael 6/18/2010 10:30:30 PM | Flag |

My opinion would be, no! You are effectively hiring this proofreader to save you time as well as be a second pair of eyes; right? And I'm sure you are proofing the proofreader when the transcript comes back to you; right? Then you are wasting time by doing your first proofread. As freelancers we are not making any money sitting at home editing, proofing or scoping. To the extent that you are freed up to take more jobs is the extent that you earning capacity is maximized. IMHO. |

No! I edit, spellcheck, and it's off. That's what the proofer is for, in my opinion. Never really thought about it being done differently! |
