9/6/2011 1:34:56 PM I feel like an idiot because I told a friend's child to put two spaces after a period, and I now realize it was probably the wrong information. I then wondered what I did before court reporting had me trained to do two spaces. I vaguely recall that I had two spaces in high school and college and then switched to one space in the entertainment industry while doing PR and other types of writing. (I know that for transcript production I had to work hard to add the comma before the conjunction at the end of a series since it had already been beaten out of me in the workplace as wrong and unnecessary.) I've read that it ultimately is a style issue that has to do with the fonts used and their respective kerning. I suspect that, because reporters typically use mono-spaced Courier font, we therefore use two spaces after the period. We also are held (in California) to minimum character requirements per line, a task more easily accomplished and readable with a mono-spaced font. What does everyone else think of this issue? Do most of you put two spaces after a period? Are we in the dark ages, and I didn't know it? I don't have kids, but do reporters with kids just leave the grammar and punctuation advice up to the schools? Of course, they don't even call it "English" anymore. Out here it's "Language Arts." Now I'm not so confident that my court reporting knowledge of the language is valid for a modern student... |

![]() | Most software automatically puts the proper amount of space (double) after a period, so you only need to type the space once. The only time you need to enter two spaces is on a typewriter. |

Who would think to use one space? Bizarro! Two spaces. Period! :) - Typin` Tootsie~ 9/6/2011 3:15:09 PM | FlagThe first part of your comment is actually the issue. I'm being told that the proper amount of space after a period is single. For instance, in MS Word, where no space is added after the period, you would type one space. FYI - I have a Medill school grad who is an editor of a major national publication telling me this. Also, I have looked at opinions online, and apparently one space is the most accepted today - including Chicago Manual, AP, and MLA. Check out the debate...http://www.slate.com/id/2281146/http://grammar.quickanddirtytips.com/spaces-period-end-of-sentence.aspxI just wonder if I need to switch back and forth between the two when it comes to modern correspondence versus court reporting transcripts so I don't look like a weirdo...ugh. - dunbarcsr 9/6/2011 3:34:25 PM | FlagOkay - those links got mushed together.http://www.slate.com/id/2281146 - dunbarcsr 9/6/2011 3:37:12 PM | Flag |

I was taught two spaces after a period. My son, who is 12, is being taught one space after a period. I'm not willing to change now, so I will continue to use two spaces. |

Old school here ... two spaces after a period. If you were taught typing, that's the way it was, and still is in my book!! We were also taught how to spell without spellcheck. |

One space after a comma, two spaces after a period, interrog, and exclamation point. One space after semicolon, two spaces after a colon. Old school/schmold school, what is the sense of jamming things closer together? It's more readable this way!

I have always put two spaces after a period and always will. My daughter, who has worked as a graphic designer in the publishing industry for several years, informs me their policy is to only put one space after a period. It drives me nuts to see it that way! I also always place a comma before the and at the end of a series, something else that is becoming more and more rare, but I am firmly convinced that is proper way to punctuate. Anything that makes text easier to read and avoids confusion is the way to go! - catlover 9/12/2011 6:21:23 PM | FlagPublishers also justify their lines, adding spaces where they don't belong. What is correct is correct, period. Anita Paul, I wish that I would have had the chance to meet you. You sound like a very cool woman. I took the NCRA seminar on realtime writing about 17 years ago and passed the CRR, though your classes sound so much more fun, especially if they involve a cruise. Kudos to you.... Leslie |

| Maggie Miller Never heard of a new grammar/punctuation rule with there`s not two spaces after a period. Always been two spaces in my book! Tuesday, September 06, 2011 | ||
| Laurie Miller Banks Court reporters are the only ones still doing two spaces after a period, at least as far as I am aware. I also learned that rule in high school but the rule has changed over time in business writing. My mom, who was a secretary at the Department of the Interior for 40+ years, and I have talked about this. In her professional experience, this rule is antiquated. I suspect you`re right about the mono-spaced font as the reason court reporters still adhere to it. Tuesday, September 06, 2011 | ||
| Judy Haisley Here is what grammerbook.com has to say: With a computer, use only one space following periods, commas, semicolons, colons, exclamation points, question marks, and quotation marks. The space needed after these punctuation marks is proportioned automatically. With some typewriters and word processors, follow ending punctuation with two spaces when using a fixed-pitch font. | Letitia Hilliard Very informative. I was a court reporter for 15 years and that`s what I was taught, 2 space-rule. I will pass this info on to my peers. Thanks everyone!! Tuesday, September 06, 2011 | ||
| Shawna Tsougarakis Slang is so common these days, most of it is just laziness, with texting, FB, etc. One space after a period, makes the period look more like a comma. Also makes it look like the sentences run together. Wednesday, September 14, 2011 | ||
| Shawna Tsougarakis ...if there is a reason for it or the profession calls for it, that is entirely different. Don`t cut corners just to get by. Do it right & don`t rely on spellcheck! Wednesday, September 14, 2011 | ||
