How do I spell word that sounds like k'luj?

This is a job of computer specialists in the Marine Corps.  They were talking about fusing together or blending a group of names to get a top three out of nine names.  One time he said "fusion" but the other three times he said k'looge or k'luj (long U sound.) ca'luj or k'luj.  I've looked it up in dictionaries and thesaurus in almost every imaginable combination.  It's not collage or collude.  There is a word spelled kludge but it's pronounced like fudge.  Another variation of that word is kluge which does sound like the write pronunciation but the definition doesn't fit.

Please HELP!!

From Barron's Dictionary of Computer and Internet Terms:

kluge (pronounced "klooge")  an improvisied, poorly thought-out

solution to a problem, usually intended for temporary use.

How about kluge (interchangeable with kludge)?  Definition is a computer system that is constituted of poorly matched elements, etc.  Sounds like that could be it.

thanks to all the Facebook folks who responded.  Just should let you know, it wasn't a deposition.  It was a hearing with witnesses coming and going & no time to stop them and ask them questions.  Started at 8:30 am and went to 6:15 pm.  No C.V., no contact info for me to get ahold of them.

The point he was conveying was to blend or merge the lists together to come up with an agreed-upon list of top three names.

How about those of us who gave you the correct spelling?    -    pinksteno 8/15/2011 6:56:41 PM | Flag
Oh, I wasn't trying to slight you, pinksteno! I appreciate all responses. You may have noticed though that I have been eyeing the word kluge as it was in my original question. But the definition does not fit with blend or merge or fuse, which is how he was using it. But I think that's my best bet. I do appreciate all responses!! ;)    -    sander 8/15/2011 7:21:17 PM | Flag
Thank you, Sander. By the way, I am in your corner, because I report public hearings and board meetings on a regular basis, and I understand the pressure you were under.    -    pinksteno 8/15/2011 8:46:38 PM | Flag
My hat's off to you for doing hearings on a regular basis. This last one I did was 384 pages. It's exhausting. I do hearings just enough to hate them!! Only about one or two a year. Everything else I do is depositions where I feel I have more control (heehee... I'm not a control freak I'm not, I'm not!!)    -    sander 8/15/2011 11:01:52 PM | Flag
My suggestion, just call the guy and ask!I am thinking that it is from collusion, and it's shorthand.    -    writekissme 9/15/2011 7:07:39 PM | Flag

The only way to get a correct spelling of this type is to get from the speaker at the depo. I would write k`looge (phonetic spelling) and k`luj (phonetic spelling) and let them figure it out. It`s their own language.

I will just say that to me the only appropriate way to handle that is by using (phonetic).

Since it is a military job, it could be an acronym for something. Double check with the witness if you can.

If you have a copy of his CV (I`m assuming he`s an expert), I would call and ask him.

Maybe collusion?

Ask him... Usually experts are really helpful. I`m thinking it`s kludge though. And if not, it`s perfectly okay to let the witness correct it when he is reading it later :)

Definitely agree with Mike Miller; however, there are two spellings. kludge (rhymes with fudge) and kluge (rhymes with stooge). Read the link he sent and you will see it is correct.

Sounds like an expert witness. I ALWAYS ask for a business card or the email address of any expert witness. In case I forget to ask them for any spelling at the conclusion of the depo, I always have their email address to clarify at a later date, if necessary. Good luck!
