2/22/2011 10:59:13 PM I am a relatively new freelance reporter in California, and I had been told that I need to get a business license. However, I had heard that it's not absolutely necessary, so I am confused. As an independent contractor/deposition reporter, am I required to get a business license in CA? And if so, would I only need to apply for one in the city that I live in? Somebody told me that we need to apply for one for each city that we work in, but if that were the case, I'd be applying for 30 different business licenses as I take depos in many different cities, and that is a bit excessive, let alone expensive. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! |

I've been reporting since 1997 and never had a business license. I'm also in CA, and I have lived in Alameda County, El Dorado County and now in San Joaquin County and still have no business license. |

I belive as a freelance reporter you only need a business licience if you want to start a firm. The firm you work for holds the business licience and you are contracted by them as a independant 1099form. You can call the NCRA directly and Iam sure you will get the answer you need. Im investagating this throughly as I am looking to start my own firm. Good Luck. |

| Lori Larsen In VA you need one for the city/county you live in. I would assume so since you`re an independent vs. an employee. Wednesday, February 23, 2011 | ||
| Ps Gunn it`s very inexpensive and also allows you to deduct work space in your home. Wednesday, February 23, 2011 | ||
| Aleece DePuey There`s a weird clause that says you only need one in the city in which you live. My husband has a business and shows this clause whenever he`s required to get a license in order to work or even bid jobs. Most employees at the licensing counter don`t even know about it, but it`s gotten him out of paying literally thousands in fees over the years. Wednesday, February 23, 2011 | ||

| Laura Klingenberg Fowler Personally I got a business license for the city I live in because I do have some of my own work and therefore I only pay the city tax on that work. If you`re working only for firms, there`s no need because they have the business license. Getting one for each city would be downright ridiculous let alone time-consuming and expensive. | Theresa Phillips-Blackwell If you live in L.A., you definitely need to get one because they will catch up with you. They caught up with me when I didn`t have one. But in L.A., if you make less than $100,000, you don`t have to pay anything because of the small business exemption. Wednesday, February 23, 2011 | ||
