Know anything about steno language books?

I am currently taking an online course in scoping, but the program won't allow us to print any of the pages.  Is there a book that one could purchase that would give some of the steno language?  Maybe an e-book that could be printed out?  I'm having to hand write everything so that I can remember it and study it, and its getting quite tedious.  Thanks for anything that would help with this.

Janelle, future Scopist

Hi, Janelle.

If the course is a web-based course from within your browser, you could try copying and pasting what you need into a WordPad document.

If the course is on "Flash Paper," then I have yet to find a way to manipulate those to allow printing or copying! :o\

You might check the various vendors (StenoTech, Acculaw, etc.) to see if they are offering any theory books for sale.  You might also check with your local library.  You never know, you just might find what you're looking for.

Good luck in your studies!

You need to know the theory that you're learning.  Once you know that, check Ebay, Craig's List (or you could put a wanted ad on Craig's List), or post a comment on Readback.org.  One of the Court Reporters or Scopists may have it just sitting around in storage.  Good luck!!

Hi Janelle,

I can certainly understand your frustration because I think it's quite valuable to be able to have the training material in a written format for all students.

Since I have been in the educational field for over 20 years and train scopists through Scoping Made Affordable (SMA), I'd be happy to discuss with you any other solutions to your problem.

Feel free to contact me via drscoping@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

Ms. Devon Roberts

StenEd Books are on Ebay and you might try to just Google StenEd and you will get a list of all the books they have which is quite a few!

I belive Stenovations sells their scopist software for around $35. It has a great feature that allows you to search in steno or English, and it has several theories to choose from!

also Phoenix Theory books (I think on the stenograph.com website) as well as Steno classifieds website as well (very good deals there)

You really don`t need to know steno to be a scopist. I am a scopist in school for court reporting and the best advise I can give you is to learn your software inside and out. Go through the software training so you will know it better than the reporters.

@Jen: Sorry, but I have to disagree about you don`t really need to know steno in order to be a scopist. You MUST know steno; in fact, my school`s scoping course requires that you learn theory before you learn about scoping. (I`ve just completed this, in hopes of working as a scopist while finishing CR studies.) One of the chief responsibilities of a scopist is being able to catch untranslates/mistranslates, and if you don`t understand theory, it doesn`t do you much good in working with a rep
