Continuing education requirements?

I know that I have to participate in continuing education credits in order to stay certified as a court reporter, but I'm afraid that the classes are going to be boring. What kinds of classes fulfill the continuing education requirements?

It's actually a good thing that court reporters have a continuing education requirement - it lets you make sure that you're able to stay up on the latest information. But that doesn't mean that you will be in a position in which you're just studying boring stuff. Whether you are interested in health or computers, there are continuing education credits that you can sign up for that will focus on things that you're interested in.

As the previous commenter said, just because you have to take continuing education credits in order to stay current as a court reporter doesn't mean that you can't participate in events that interest you. From food labeling laws to health insurance explorations, you'll find that there are a number of great courses available to you that are approved by the NCRA - and many of them are available online so you won't even need to sacrifice time on the job or with your family.

I love attending conventions and you can earn CE credits through those. You can also take on-line webinars for more training on your CAT software and earn CEs. There are many options out there.

Whoops! Am I missing something? I only pay my renewal every year during my birth month and stay certified. There's nothing more required for my CSR... and I like it that way!

Sarah, if you get additional accreditations - RPR, RMR - etc., then I believe that's when you need the CEs to keep them.

Either way, I doubt it will be boring - perhaps stuff you already know from working in the field, but... You can attend the conventions and seminars either way as well.

I agree! It's at conventions and seminars that I have met new people and forged great friendships in this field!    -    Todd Olivas 5/9/2010 7:11:13 PM | Flag
Right! Entrance fee to seminar...$295
Grammar seminar for CE credits...$65
Making friends and getting a tax write-off...priceless!    -    jeanese 5/9/2010 8:46:53 PM | Flag

There are online course with NCRA and Stenograph. You can get CEU`s by going to seminars. All of these are NOT boring......
