Congrats on thinking about freelancing - it's a big career step. That said, it makes sense that you're nervous. You may want to network with other freelance court reporters - they can be great allies. They'll be able to talk you through your nerves and provide you with some great tips that will help you to make some real progress. Beyond that, your local small business association can help you to set up the business end of things. Get great business cards and talk with the attorneys you know and let them know to get in touch with you when they need a court reporter's services. |

Are there smaller agencies in your area? If so, some of them may be willing to work with you as a freelancer in a contract role to help you as you're getting your own business up and running. Also, you may want to think about whether or not you're willing to travel for court reporting jobs as this will create additional opportunities for you. And don't forget to advertise your services - even online - and be an active member of any court reporter organizations in your area as this will help to enhance your reputation, especially as you're just getting started working on your own. |
