Electronic reporting is the use of audio equipment that records the proceedings. For court reporters who are using electronic reporting, most of their time is spent making sure that the recording process goes smoothly and taking notes on who is speaking when. |

Electronic reporting involves making an audio recording of a hearing, trial or deposition, taking clear notes, and providing a written transcript after the deposition, hearing, or trial. |

A Digital Reporter or Electronic reporter is someone that has a $999 four track digital recorder and microphone system that records the proceedings and then takes it home and types it up. It's advertised that you need to be able to type 35 words a minute to be an electronic reporter. Someone at 35 words a minute cannot compete with a court reporter at 225+ -- you input 6 times faster. If those digital recordings are sent to Pakistan, India, or China they can be transcribed for 15 cents per page. We have made efforts to address this in the Washington State Legislature. The answer from the legislature is "where is the smoking gun?" In other words, they want a specific example of this being done. Then they will act. Does anyone out there know who is sending transcripts overseas?
