4/17/2010 3:43:14 PM What are the big differences between a court reporter and a deposition reporter? I've seen articles that seem to refer to them interchangably, but I figure there must be some differences between the two titles. Is there different training required, or different responsibilities? |

There is no difference in the skill of either but rather in the location in which they work. Court reporters, as you may infer, work in court. While deposition reporters work elsewhere -- typically an attorney's office -- performing depositions. Hope that helps. |

I ALWAYS have to clarify when I tell people I'm a court reporter -- eh, hem... but not in court, though! I see the quizzical look on their face, like, how can that be? I say, I go to attys' offices and take down a person's story. They still don't get it... |

same thing.... but never heard anyone in NY refer to themselves as deposition reporters... we're all court reporters, doesn't matter where you work, we're all officers of the court taking down the official record...
only once in a while do i get that look of uh? what channel?? so i say court stenographers so many people are clueless, half the time i make the hand motion and say, you know, the person who sits up front in court and they get this look like a light goes off... :) |
