![]() | The previous commenter nailed what CART is, but didn't talk much about some of the additional benefits for those who are able to use it for court reporting. In addition to making sure that those who are deaf or who may have trouble with English are better able to access the information that is being gone over in a deposition, hearing, or trial, CART offers some benefits to the court reporters as well. CART reporters are able to work directly with lawyers who frequently represent deaf clients or can work directly with those who are deaf - accompanying them to doctor's appointment. Additionally, they'll find that they are able to work remotely in order to provide transcriptions and are better able to move into careers in television captioning programming or even with emergency services providers to ensure that the information that people need to stay safe is conveyed appropriately. |

Communication Access Real-time Translation is a captioning process that's used in a number of computer enabled courtrooms. Also known as CART, it's a transcription process that is beneficial for those in the courtroom who are deaf, as well those who are learning English as a second language who may be better at reading than they are catching the discussion orally. |
