After court reporting?

I'm thinking about becoming a court reporter, but I'm not sure that it's a career that I want to have forever. Is there something that it can evolve into? What are career opportunities that exist after court reporting?

Hi, Jane.

If you get tired of working in court (or tired of working with attorneys in general) there is captioning and CART.

Captioning is when a person trained to use a steno machine writes the words the actors/news anchors/etc. are saying ... but if you're trying to get away from attorneys, you still might get stuck writing what one is saying on the news or TV shows.

CART (that's Communications Access Realtime Translation) is where a person trained in the use of a steno machine shadows a deaf/hard of hearing (hoh) student to their various classes, and writes what the instructor and classmates are saying ... and, unless your client is attending law school, no lawyers!

On my website, http://www.cheapandsleazy.net, there are two articles on captioning and two on CART.  They aren't the end-all, be-all of these fields, but they are good places to start.

Good luck to you ....

After court reporting, there are a number of things that you can do. If you've been in business for yourself and freelancing, you can look into launching your own agency.

Many people who have been court reporters go on to look into careers related to television - that's always an option if it interests you.

I have reached the point you are talking about.  What to do after reporting?  Well, I still dabble a bit with reporting.  My hands are about shot.  I have a tremor in my hands that has about killed my good translation.   In the last few years I have discovered writing.  I always knew I had an ability to write very good letters, but having participated in several court reporting forums, I have been told by my colleagues that I am a good storyteller.  Many have encouraged me to write.   I have now written many short stories and even one novelett.   What I lack is the education as far as the mechanics of getting to the level that I want to be at.  I am studying books on storytelling and screenwriting.   After 42 years as a court reporter, the stories in my head never stop.  Not too long ago, I played a game with another reporter.  She gave me a sentence to start the story, and I ran with it for 62 single-spaced pages.

Whether I make any money as a writer remains to be seen, but this is what I intend to do.
