7/29/2010 1:27:32 PM I heard there are problems with realtime while using the serial-to-USB adaptor. I am just starting to use a new Acer netbook and hope I don't have this problem since I use an older machine, Stentura 8000LX. Your experience? |

I have been using a serial-to-USB adaptor for years. I have a Stentura 8000 that I purchased in 1994, using a Toshiba laptop purchased in 2006. The only problems I've ever had was when I needed a new cable. |

One thing to watch out for is that some computers want to save power by turning off the USB ports that they don't think you're using. Not good if you're in realtime and you're using a USB to serial adapter! If you want to check your settings, go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager. I have XP, so yours may be a little different path to get to Device Manager. Find Universal Serial Bus controllers (fancy name for USB) and click on the plus sign or box to the left to show a list of USB options. Find the first instance of USB root hub and double-click it. Look under the Power Management tab and make sure to UNcheck next to the line that says you allow the computer to turn off the USB to save power. Click okay. Then do that for each instance of USB root hub. Hope that helps! Julie Samford |

That's all I use for realtime since I can't afford to go wireless. Never had a problem and I use a Mira A3. |

What was the problem you heard about? I also have an 8000LX and use the adapter because my laptop takes USB. I also use the adapters on my netbooks to hook in the realtime cables for atty-viewing. Never had an issue or problem. The adapters range in price. Opt for the $19 and up as opposed to the $14 or $9. |

Hello ... I have two laptops for steno. One has a serial port, and the other does not. When I need to use the "sans-serial" laptop, yes, I use an adapter. As Judy mentioned, you just have to ensure that your USB ports don't doze off on you ... and, of course, you also have to check with your CAT vendor to see which adapter *not* to buy. For example, I'm using digitalCAT, and one of the adapters they tell you not to buy is the one I'm using: A Keyspan adapter. The catch is I am using this adapter with a ProCAT Flash, so it works just fine. As for wireless, go here: http://www.cheapandsleazy.net/bluetooth.html Good luck ... and hope that helps! |

USB to serial seems to work fine - when I used to use it - from the steno machine to the computer. I've used Bluetooth or a direct USB from the writer since 2007. The problem with USB-to-serial adaptors happens when you try to output to attorneys' computers. Lots of driver conflict errors, depending on your computer, depending on the brand of the adaptor, etc. Many reporters get the blue-screen-of-death! |

| Keshia Burse the only problem is finding an adapter that actually works. I went through about 5 of them before I found one that would even recognize my machine. It really depends on which writer you use and your computer. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Janet Wilson I also use a Stentura 8000LX with CaseCATylst. I use a Keyspan USB to serial adapter. Some brands will not work, but I`ve never had problems with the Keyspan. My laptop is Toshiba. Good luck! Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Anne Bryant I really like the Coolgear usb serial adapter. I haven`t had any problems with it, and when I have suggested to other reporters who have had problems in realtime to switch to Coolgear, they did. Most of those who switched told me that their freezing problems in realtime went away after switching. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Danielle Diamond-Gregory I use the coolgear one.love it Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Nicole Sesta Where do you guys find this adapters? I`m just getting my equipment together..Have a Stentura 8000LX, just bought 2 netbooks and next is the usb serial adapter. I`ve heard there are window 7 issues, which is why I bought refurb netbooks with XP on them. Where is the best place to get these adapters??Thanks! Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Anne Bryant If you`re going for any brand usb to serial adapters, you can find them at Best Buy, Fry`s, Staples, Office Depot... pretty much anywhere that sells computer accessories. However, if you`re looking to get a Coolgear, the only place I know of that you can get one is through the Stenodoctor. Go to www.stenodoctor.com, click on his online store, and you can find it under Realtime Cables & Accessories. Or you can call his number and order it on Monday if you`d rather not order it online. | Lisa Mildenhall I`ve had problems with Windows 7 but from reading these responses, maybe I just need to try other adaptors. Mine installed and works just fine sometimes for 2 minutes; sometimes for 10 minutes. But then it will either cut off or the whole Case CAT program will shut down. Very frustrating but I`m encouraged to try another adaptor. Mine came from Micro Center. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Jane Siegel Goodman Which Coolgear adapter are you using? I just looked at their web site and see one that you can use with a cable or not (one less thing to go wrong!). Looks sporty! Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Jo Kramer When I had my Stentura, I went to Best Buy and got a serial-to-USB and never had a lick of problems with it. And I am on CaseCatalyst, but running Vista. You never know, it could be your operating system. However, if you go get a Diamonte, you won`t have that problem because you won`t need that cable. Should solve all your problems. | Lisa Carlson I have a stentura 8000lx,`procat and windows 7. Took 5 tries to get the right one but got it thru procat. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Suzanne Reid i went through five also. now I use a serial i/o pc card that fits into the PCMCIA card slot. has worked like a charm for five years now. that said...I cannot wait to get a new writer and be done with that issue!!! Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Anne Bryant Jane, the one I`m using and the only one the StenoDoctor sells is the cabled Coolgear. I have not tried the cableless one, but I don`t see why it would work any less better than the cabled version, because both use the same drivers. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Kimmie Girgus I have CaseCatalyst and bought my adapters from Stenograph. Seems to work perfect if it`s their equipment. Tried to use other brands and kept having trouble. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Mia Clark Wireless is the only way to go. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Jane Siegel Goodman I think I`ll order it right now. Sadly a wireless writer is not in the cards for me right now either. I like the idea of a PCMCIA slot adapter too, but that`s where my air card lives :0 Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Mia Clark Before I went wireless, I used the Cool Gear. Never had a problem. I`ve been using the Mira since it came out. It`s great a machine. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Linda Pool The drivers for the USB to serial adapter tend to make your computer freeze. I did have better luck with the Cool Gear adapter. Once I went to the wireless connection, like magic, all freezing issues disappeared. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Marla Sharp USB-to-serial adapters suck! Even if you find one that works, it will eventually not work - and not tell you about it, sending you on a troubleshooting tailspin.Buy Stenocast RED. It rocks. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Tania Koven I went through sooo many until i got one from Stenograph. I don`t know why that one made the differnce but it`s been 7 years with that one... (knock on wood). Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Lynn Tumino Goff That`s good to know, Tania. I`m a student and just bought my laptop but have yet to get my adapter. I will just get it from Stenograph. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Erica Ruggieri Windows XP works fine its windows 7 that doesnt work with the usb to serial adapter. And this is for Case Catalyst. You know, the rogram from the evil empire stenograph?! But I did get an adapter in the mail so i will try it and get back to you all. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Debbie West go get one at Staples or Best Buy, probably much cheaper than Stenograph Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Erica Ruggieri stenograph does not sell the usb to serail adapter. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Karen Williams Brideau Used one purchased from Staples. But I used it on Catalyst 4, and it always froze. Now on Catalyst 11 and don`t need the adapter. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Lori Kavalesky-Chapiewski Keyspan works for me...I ordered through STenograph...that way I have the tech support by ordering through their website to help me make it work! Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||

| Jenny Craig I used coolgear. Was told initially I`d have problems and after a couple years I saw the dreaded blue screen. The only solution was to buy an updated writer (USB) and connect USB to USB. Sunday, August 01, 2010 | ||
| Ritz Young I haven`t read all of the comments to this question, but wouldn`t the most serious issues with Windows 7 and the usb adapters revolve around not having a driver that is compatible with W7? Monday, August 02, 2010 | ||
| Linda Rossi-Rios I was having blue screens and without any help from Stenograph figured out it was the USB. I bought a Keyspan USB and haven`t had a problem since. However, it does not have a Windows 7 driver so when I called the company they said to use the Vista driver. The old USBs won`t work with Windows 7. Monday, August 02, 2010 | ||
