Does anyone know how to get practice dictation on an iPod or if there is a website we can go to to download the dictation to a computer then transfer it to an iPod?

Here are two pages worth of free online dictation resources that I have compiled. Once you download them, load them into iTunes and then drag and drop the files onto your iPod. Hope that helps!

There are lots of states who need good reporters.  Nothing wrong with moving and gaining experience along the way.  That's not for everybody, but you just never know where this job will lead you.

Why not record your own?

If you get tired of the usual Q&A, Lit, and JC, go to this page.  You will learn how to record talk radio off of your radio, onto a VCR, and from there, into your computer via Audacity and onto your iPod via iTunes.

The subject matter is different, but these are mostly Q&A with some weird terminology thrown in.

Good luck to you .....

Marlene, thank you for your honesty. However, may I add the point that you are not getting paid because the state of CA is bankrupt. Perhaps instead of dooming the entire field, you could look into situations in other states, or examine broadcast captioning or some other area that used CR`s skills. You cannot rely on the government in this day and age for a paycheck!

I received my California CSR in 1996. For the first half of my career, I worked for a deposition agency, and the second half I spent in Los Angeles Superior Court. Since that time, there have been highs and lows and some scares, including lay-offs by Los Angeles Superior Court. Things have ALWAYS rebounded. It shouldn`t be a huge surprise that court reporting has been hit by the economic crisis, as has almost every other industry (especially in California). I have also taught in the court r

I`m an official in CA, and in the county I work in, almost everything is reported. As far as misdemeanor trials, we report those on the request of the attorneys -- and they almost always request a reporter because they like to have read-back available for the jurors when they`re deliberating. We do have one furlough day a month that we`re required to take because of the budget, but there will be no layoffs and they will continue to hire per diems. Reporters here in Central Valley are VERY bus

Just to let you students know, I am more than happy to be contacted with questions or pep talks or whatever you need help with. I still think that court reporting is one of the greatest professions around, and I doubt anything will ever change my mind about that, especially since I successfully weathered the ups and downs and came out on top. Again, I think one of the keys to success is to be an excellent realtime reoprter.

I`m going to say what everyone else wants to, Marlene, you are a negative, bad person! Those of us who have been slaving away at school, don`t need people like you on this site! I was warned against going to reporting school in *1974* because it was so obvious to everyone that tape recorders were going to take over. Although some lower courts and less important matters did go to tape, those lost jobs have been more than made up for by the advent of CART and captioning. There will never be a tape recorder that can provide quality realtime transcription, not with all the variables that are involved. While voicewritjng may be able to produce quality realtime, the amoun

I`m a student and have no worries. Court Reporting is a growing profession. Court isn`t the only option. There is freelance, captioning, and CART. The Midwest is screaming for court reporters. The only court reporters I see becoming obsolete are reporters who refuse to get on the realtime bandwagon. Don`t let negative people scare you away. She`s obvious disgruntled with her career choice. Every single new reporter coming out of the program I`m in is snatched up quickly. There is a reason why p

Let`s stop demonizing Marlene. That is her opinion and her experience. Everyone has a right to share. That`s what a social website is. That said, no career is 100 percent recession proof. I`ve been a freelance reporter for 25 years in FL. Yes, it is slow right now but has a lot to do with the economy in general. It`s also summertime. Maybe Marilyn didn`t phrase things the best way, but reporters being replaced by recording is no longer a distant threat. It`s happening right now to many, many officials. If this is news to anyone, I suggest you join your state and national organizations to find out what`s really going on.And sure, realtime is awesome and could be the future of the profession but most people can barely obtain the speed to just get out of school and we (working reporters) know that`s not fast enough for the

Speed is key for realtime. You can have the best theory and briefs in the world but without that reserve speed over 225 wpm, you will not be able to write cleanly. Do not be dependent on audio because it only slows you down.
